Luxury holiday experts, and WPC partner, Original Travel share their top tips for planning your dream honeymoon
Your honeymoon is the icing on the cake – after the best day of your life it will be the most amazingly romantic and decadent holiday you have ever been on…no pressure, then. Well that’s where we come in. We’re here to turn a potentially stressful process into the most fun part of your wedmin. And just to whet your appetite, we’ve compiled a list of some of our top tips for planning a honeymoon, whether you’re planning it as a couple or going down the traditional ‘surprise the bride route’.
Choose your destination wisely. Most people get married during the summer but this can rule out a fair few destinations. Ideally, choose somewhere that neither of you have been to before so you don’t have to suffer tales of ‘well, when we were here…’ – this way you can discover somewhere together. And be open-minded – don’t be afraid to consider somewhere that you have never thought of travelling to before, the unexpected can be pleasantly surprising. One thing is for sure though, choose somewhere where you are likely to get good weather for the time of year.
Incorporate some flop time. Ideally at the start of the holiday, even if it is just for a couple of days. However active you are in your daily life, don’t underestimate how tired you will be after the culmination of months of planning, followed by an exhausting (but amazing) wedding day and a long trip to reach your honeymoon destination. You’ll be practically crawling to the sun lounger by the time you get there. Save the sky diving and heli-skiing for the end of the trip.
Mix it up. In order to feel like you’ve been away for longer and to tick off all your honeymoon wish list boxes, choosing two or more places to visit can work brilliantly. Classic combinations that work well and keep everyone happy include: safari & beach, city & beach and culture & beach.
Work your way up. While it’s great to dive straight into the most hyper luxurious hotels there is definitely something to be said for gradually taking things up notch by notch as you go along and ending with somewhere really uber so you can look forward to ending on a high.
Get professional help. Nope, we’re not recommending marriage counselling at this early stage; we’re talking about bringing in the professionals (hint: that’s us) when planning your honeymoon. Not only will it make the whole process much less stressful, but we will be able to organise special upgrades and treats along the way, as well as recommending activities and experiences that the average DIY-er just wouldn’t get access to.
