<p>Lady Clare Piggot created the first placemat decorated with a coloured print in Paris in 1932. Her husband working for the British embassy, she often entertained diplomats and became concerned at the laundry bills she was incurring for the starched white table cloths formality required her to use for dinners. As a result she created some placemats from shaped and painted hardboard with a flower print applied to the surface. Receiving much praise from her innovative and beautiful table d&eacute;cor, she began her company, Lady Clare.</p> <p>Today, the company offers a range of placemats for formal and casual dining as well as accessories such as waste bins and trays.
