At Home With Lucy Williams: On Wedding Gifts, the Joy of Choosing Well, and the Pieces Worth Keeping Forever

Stylist and the voice behind one of Instagram's most-loved British interiors accounts, Lucy Williams on the wedding gifts worth choosing, the table worth setting, and why a great gift list is really a favour to your guests.

Creating a bespoke wedding registry is one of the most personal parts of wedding planning, a chance to fill your home with things you and your partner genuinely love. Lucy Williams' home, a West London Victorian terrace is living proof of what that kind of intention builds over time. Warm, layered, entirely personal. Books double-stacked on shelves, vintage ceramics grouped with the quiet confidence of someone who has stopped second-guessing, a backgammon board left open on the table as though a game was interrupted and might resume at any moment.

"My love language is unashamedly gifts, second only to acts of service," says Williams. "So I think choosing a wedding gift list might actually have been the highlight of wedding planning for me, especially when the boxes of prizes hold booty like this."

Stylist, brand consultant and the creative behind one of the most-loved British home accounts on Instagram, Lucy Williams believes the best homes are built slowly, with pieces that tell a story. Her cosy all-blue living room, painted top to toe in Farrow & Ball Yonder, has become something of an icon. Saved on Pinterest boards by interiors aficionados across the internet, including our own. A self-confessed restrained maximalist and collector at heart, she loves layering bold colour, mixing vintage finds with artisan pieces, and letting a beautifully made object speak for itself.

We visited Lucy Williams at home to talk the best wedding gifts, the pleasure of choosing well, and why the pieces you reach for every day are always the ones worth putting on the list - read on to find out more.

"I actually really appreciate a wedding list from other people. I want to know what you actually need. It's something you've chosen...and that just feels nice, because you know it's wanted."

Lucy Williams On Wedding Gift List Ideas, Giving Well, And Knowing What Someone Actually Wants

Our afternoon visit begins in the sitting room, where Lucy is settled into a cream armchair with a sheepskin throw, framed artwork on the walls behind her, warm light falling across the wooden furniture and ceramics that seem to occupy every available surface. The room smells of tomato vine and warm earth. A Carrière Frères tomato diffuser on the side table, scenting the room with something green and sharp that feels exactly right for a spring day. She is already holding the Addison Ross salt and pepper mills, just lifted from the box. "Such a good gift," she says. "I've given these to my mum, my mother-in-law, my sister. Everyone loves them." It says everything about the way Williams thinks about objects for the home: not in terms of occasion but longevity. What gets used, what stays, what earns its place.

She reflects on her own wedding on Andros four years ago, the kind of day she has described as the best party she attended in a very long time, before turning to gift giving, gift lists, and what it feels like to curate one. "I actually really appreciate a wedding list from other people," she continues. "I'm like, I want to know what you actually need. I don't want to buy you something that isn't in line with what you want to have in your home. It's something that you've chosen. I actually find that so, A, helpful, and B, it just feels nice, because you know it's wanted." Only highlighting the reasons why wedding guests love it when you have a gift list.

When she considers what she would have put on her own, the answer comes easily. "There are so many brands that I already know and love that The Wedding Present Company stocks," she says, with a laugh. "So I think my main problem if I was doing a list with them would be to narrow it down, rather than to fill it up."

She gets up, moving across the room to fix an Issy Granger linen lampshade onto its base, adjusting it until it sits just right. "I always think it must be such a nice part of the whole process, to sit down, go through all the bits and pieces that you can imagine having in your home." It is characteristic of the way she approaches interiors generally. Lucy's renovation of this house was documented gradually on Instagram, room by room, less a project than an ongoing conversation between herself and the space.

Earlier in the afternoon, Lucy spent time arranging stems and greenery into an LSA International column vase, the sort of quiet, absorbing task that suits the pace of this house. Later the flowers will make their way to the dining table and surfaces throughout the room, adding height and softening the space without competing with anything.

The Forwood Design backgammon board is open on the coffee table. Beautifully made and finished with real precision, it is the kind of piece that earns its place as a group gift: something guests club together for, something that has every chance of becoming an heirloom. Lucy moves the counters on the board with easy familiarity. A home feels different for having things like this in it.

Lucy Williams On Everyday Hosting And The Gifts That Make It

Which brings us to Lucy Williams' kitchen and dining room, the heart of the house, and if you have been following her for any length of time, a familiar and much-admired space. Dark wooden cabinetry, a central island, the earlier flower arrangement now centred on the table. When Lucy turns her attention to the dining table, it becomes something between a still life and a rehearsal for the kind of hosting she clearly loves. A Rebecca Udall striped linen tablecloth goes down first. Then the Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage platter with an asparagus starter, cheese grated over the top, Secret Linen Store napkins folded at each place, the Late Afternoon Claro jug, a Sophie Conran for Portmeirion roasting dish with tomatoes set to one side. "As soon as I look at this, I just think, like, summer barbecues, hosting, all the good things," she says.

She picks up the burgundy Late Afternoon cutlery. "Really, really good cutlery is always an amazing sort of grown-up upgrade, I think, in terms of wedding presents." Then, placing the Villeroy & Boch dinner plates, their delicate rose and green motifs running along the rim, she continues: "The same goes for really lovely plates. The kind of plates that you're going to use every day, just the two of you. Just feel a little bit more like, yeah, a bit more like date night at home."

The table is set, the flowers are arranged, the afternoon light is beginning to shift. Lucy steps back, satisfied. "Thanks for letting me play make believe and talk all things wedding gifts," she says. "I'll be bookmarking The Wedding Present Company for our vow renewal."
